so it's cold here

not as cold as Chicago but cold. Cold for K-town in particular. It use to get cold here, it even use to snow here like real snow, sledding, snowball fights, snowmen. I fact my first winter here there was a blizzard that left us without power for a week. Of course losing power in a snow storm almost had me moving back north where I had never experienced that but I survived and it stopped snowing here, global warming and all that I suppose. MIL called me several times on Thursday to make sure I was properly outfitting her grandson. And while her concern is sweet and touching she loves her grandson um hello?! I grew up in CT and I am familiar with hats, gloves and winter coats we even did boots. Ahh winter boots...I had a pretty red case to carry my shoes to and from school in. Maybe it was pink? I don't remember it has been a few years.
The innerweb parents seemed to generate a flurry of activity proclaiming they should close school because it was too cold. Many surrounding school systems did just that Knox county did not-more on that in a minute. One of the reasons behind the cancellations-some kids don't have winter coats. Strange while you may not need them the entire winter it does get cold enough to warrant owning one including a hat & gloves while we're at it. There are many many consignment shops around town plus one of the charities does a giant coat thing each year so having a coat is not out of the realm of possibilities, in my opinion anyway. Of course C could not find any of his nine bazillion hats so I made him wear a hoodie to school for the head covering and the added bonus of layering see MIL I can manage! Back to the school cancellations Knox did not cancel but kids could stay home and have an excused absence. C went to school. Come on really cold? It's not like they have recess outside in this weather(although we did at St Greg's back in the day). Amusingly the Stupidintendent was surprised at the high absence rates. He needs to crawl out from whatever rock he is under and quit listening to the local folks that are "advising" him. The children learning should be your number one priority sir. Of Course the all of the high schools had low attendance rates didn't need to be a brain surgeon to suss that one out. Sadly the other numbers did not shock or surprise me it broke down as I would have guessed which is why we based the purchase of our house primarily upon school zone

I use to think I was losing my mind slowly

except it seems to have accelerated lately. I missed that doctor's visit by 24 hour last week then yesterday, and I wasn't going to publicly admit this but I completely went to the wrong building for my lecture.
It took me more than a few minutes to figure it out.
And some help from someone else.
I felt utterly & completely stupid. This is a community college and not a large campus-what 4 maybe 5 buildings? So I was few minutes late for class what a great way to start the semester off on the right foot. Oh how your opinion of lateness changes when you are an adult and paying for school yourself! On to my next gaff...the PTA staff appreciation committee has a soup/salad luncheon for the teachers and I volunteered to make my tortellini soup because it is super yummy and super easy to make. Got up this morning and put it together, threw it in the crock pot and drove C and the soup to school. Walked in to the office to drop it off and oops the soup/salad lunch is next Friday. I am having some issues here! I suppose on top of the day timer I carry in my purse and the calendar I have in my kitchen I am going to have to start scheduling things on my computer and my cell phone.

funny how people embrace technology

or not...
Last semester my lab professor told us from the start that yes he has email but if we wanted to get in touch him that would not be the way as he does not check it on a regular basis. For all intents and purposes he should have said no I don't have email. However this semester with today being the first day of classes the lab professor already has the semester up with assignments, syllabus, quizzes all of it. I definitely prefer this approach. Now the lecture last semester used the interweb but she was not the most organized which meant power points would not be available until after class. I detest being taught by power point but I would have at least liked to have the notes to follow along with. I did ask if she could get us the material sooner and was basically blown off, in a nice way but blown off. This semester's teacher for the lecture has nothing up yet I hope that is not a reflection of how she runs her class. Guess I will find that out in a little over an hour. In this day & age with technology being what it is the teachers need to start embracing the times.

parenting question #472

what is your policy on sleepovers?
C was invited to a birthday party, a sleepover and David is uncomfortable with it because we do not know the parents. It is not some child he met on the street corner, they go to school together and as far as I know they aren't sacrificing a goat or anything(at least it wasn't mentioned on the invite). It is a group of kids from his class invited to a sleepover birthday party sort of what we are planning on doing for C this summer with kids whose parents we don't really know. Sleepovers were a huge part of my kidhood both at my house & at other people's houses and I do not see the big deal. Yes I know bad things happen I don't have my head in the sand but we will not be covering some of more more paranoid overprotective fears in the blog today. C has been allowed to attend sleepovers with 2 other children that honestly we didn't know their parents all that well either so I am not sure how to convince hubs that this will be okay. Or we have the alternative telling C sorry no fun party with your friends you get to be the kid who is stuck at home with your parents.

another terse letter from the doctor's office

good grief I seem to rack these up huh?
Last Friday I checked my appointment book to confirm that my doctors appointment was at 2.15 and indeed it was at 2.15 just on Thursday not Friday. Unusual for me to be off by 24 hours but okay it had been the holidays I called and re-scheduled right away and considered mentioning that I did not get the automated reminder call but let it go. This was my mistake and not exactly a big deal. Imagine my surprise when I open my mail Saturday a letter scolding me for missing an appointment and that they would let it slide this time however the next time it happened I would be charged $40...you'd think they would have better things to do rather than harass for all of my transgressions

yes I can be bought

I seem to have competing grocers vying for my affections cash on a fairly consistent basis these days with a near constant barrage of coupons. Not a complaint mind you it is a good thing I am most definitely a coupon shopper and am not necessarily a devotee of any one store over the other. So please keep the coupons coming folks I will happily bump back and forth between you! And the prescription transfer coupons keep those coming as well!
