how I know we won't have any snow whatsoever this season

MIL bought the kiddo not 1 but 2 new sleds just this weekend, guaranteeing we will not see any significant snow this year.

early warning system

at 4:21ish this morning I got woken up with the news that C heard a train sound and was that a tornado so should we all pile into the bathroom....however this train sound was indeed um just a train we live close enough to to tracks to hear trains all the time. Thanks to my my budding meteorologist for looking out for us!

guess I figured wrong

I thought everyone bought enough groceries to last the ice age earlier in the week...um no evidently not beacuse the store was an absolute nuthouse this afternoon it took me twice as long to take care of my weekly shop which got me cranky, talk to myself cranky and you would think people would get out of the way of a cranky lady muttering under her breath but again no it just made them move slower and/or stand in one spot blocking access to the rest of the aisle

day two of snow day miracle

Monday was only 1/2 a day of miracle so this will be second full day. Yes they are out of school again today except there has not been more snow it is just very very cold and they say we maybe might have more snow at some point today upshot being no school today. I have some school work to do myself this morning and then I will see if Mee-Maw doesn't mind a visitor again today, hopefully the Wii has cooled down after much play yesterday..

the snow day miracle

first thing out of C's mouth this morning. There was more miracle talk when the weather came on and they started in with more snow coming tonight. So a snow miracle??!? Not really quite sure it qualifies as a miracle but whatever....
While my class was technically cancelled the teacher sent out the word she wanted us there at 10 ready to start on the exam. So I went and did what she assigned then found the rest of it online to be finished before noon tomorrow & I have plans to finish it tomorrow morning in my pajamas & slippers with my morning coffee. Isn't technology grand?
David dropped C over at his mother's house for the day so he could play Wii and probably eat pizza or Mickey D's for lunch as well as various & sundry other bits of junk food throughout the day. Not exactly the most productive use of a day off but what are 'ya going to do? I think perhaps the full snow day today might have been a waste especially if we get the snow they are calling for tonight and really need a snow day tomorrow. I don't know I realize it can be a difficult decision, can't please all of the people all of the time etc however I think they could have managed with just a delay this morning. They never do delays here for some reason I just don't know what that reason might be.

The early dismissal was kind of nice. I napped. After C finished his homework I broke rules and let him play PS2on a weekday so I could nap. It was a good thing. Tonight finds him wishing, hoping and praying hard for a snow day tomorrow. We have made him go to bed regular time just in case but I am thinking it will be an icy mess tomorrow morning so they will call school. I would prefer they do it before I go to bed but no big deal I suppose I am usually up fairly early. I do have an exam myself in the morning that I am wondering about. The snow event 2 weeks ago gave us a 2 hour delay cancelling class so I suppose that the same is likely for us tomorrow but I have studied just in case. I thankfully have signed up for text alerts so any delays will go right to my phone no need to hover around the tv,radio or computer for an update. Growing up my brother & I would use our back porch as the snow gauge and depending on how high it was on the ledge we would analyse the likelihood of a 1 hour delay, a 2 hour delay or a cancellation.

need to rethink my snow event protocol

rather I need to figure out what my snow event protocol is and then perhaps rethink it. As it started to snow and stick I kept checking the news sites for school closures and by the time they called it I had already decided to head west and fetch the kid. I had called daycare earlier and confirmed that they would have the bus out to collect the kids from school which was good because(bad mother alert) I have no flipping idea what I wrote on the emergency card as to what C should be doing in an emergency. He could get picked up by several folks including myself or he can take the bus home although he does not have a key so maybe not a great idea, there is a friend's house the next street over that he could go to if he were to ride the bus, assuming, that they are home. So fine, finally Knox calls it for 12.30 however I did not have enough time to get him & notify the aftercare van that I did have him in fact if I could have gotten him first. Soooo I went to this daycare and wound up waiting almost an hour for him there. Quite honestly the scariest road conditions were the road & driveway of the daycare. And I had to wait almost an hour till he got there. A wasted hour at that! I should have stayed at work and done some work, or taken my lunch with me and had that while waiting, or if I had brought my textbook with me this morning I could have got some study time in which brings me to my next question my exam at 9.10 wonder if that will happen, safe bet C won't have school but will I?

I do not have enough bread

but we are well stocked with milk and eggs...Not exactly a big snow event but snow nonetheless. I hope it stays warmish or tomorrow morning will be messy and I suppose no school for the kid. Stay tuned

so it's cold here

not as cold as Chicago but cold. Cold for K-town in particular. It use to get cold here, it even use to snow here like real snow, sledding, snowball fights, snowmen. I fact my first winter here there was a blizzard that left us without power for a week. Of course losing power in a snow storm almost had me moving back north where I had never experienced that but I survived and it stopped snowing here, global warming and all that I suppose. MIL called me several times on Thursday to make sure I was properly outfitting her grandson. And while her concern is sweet and touching she loves her grandson um hello?! I grew up in CT and I am familiar with hats, gloves and winter coats we even did boots. Ahh winter boots...I had a pretty red case to carry my shoes to and from school in. Maybe it was pink? I don't remember it has been a few years.
The innerweb parents seemed to generate a flurry of activity proclaiming they should close school because it was too cold. Many surrounding school systems did just that Knox county did not-more on that in a minute. One of the reasons behind the cancellations-some kids don't have winter coats. Strange while you may not need them the entire winter it does get cold enough to warrant owning one including a hat & gloves while we're at it. There are many many consignment shops around town plus one of the charities does a giant coat thing each year so having a coat is not out of the realm of possibilities, in my opinion anyway. Of course C could not find any of his nine bazillion hats so I made him wear a hoodie to school for the head covering and the added bonus of layering see MIL I can manage! Back to the school cancellations Knox did not cancel but kids could stay home and have an excused absence. C went to school. Come on really cold? It's not like they have recess outside in this weather(although we did at St Greg's back in the day). Amusingly the Stupidintendent was surprised at the high absence rates. He needs to crawl out from whatever rock he is under and quit listening to the local folks that are "advising" him. The children learning should be your number one priority sir. Of Course the all of the high schools had low attendance rates didn't need to be a brain surgeon to suss that one out. Sadly the other numbers did not shock or surprise me it broke down as I would have guessed which is why we based the purchase of our house primarily upon school zone

oh um yeah no not here in K-town but up north they got plenty of it going on! We still have rain lots and lots of rain so it'll be not so much a white Christmas but instead a damp Christmas. As luck would have it kiddo & I are not traveling north today which was the original plan I have a feeling even if we got out of here we'd be stuck at an airport for a day. I suppose sometimes things work out for the best.

snow day

hmmm yup did not get one. Shocking I know. Good thing I made my nine bazillion cookies last night although I believe I caused a rift in my marriage by telling David he could not sample any. Yes I should have made an extra batch but I had exactly enough for the teacher's cookie exchange. I suppose I will make more this weekend. So back to the snow day or rather lack there of.. I still turned on local news this morning because lack of snow is not necessarily an indication of school cancellation C anxiously watched with me and got excited when he saw Knox County scrawl across the bottom only to have his little hopes shattered at it being Knox County KY
maybe next time buddy...

rain rain and more rain

bleech I feel like a drowned rat and my house smells of wet dog. I am sick of standing water on the roads & in parking lots, my clothes being damp and looking at my yard full of muddy nasty puddles... I was going to say well at least it isn't snow but looking at the forecast it might be snow tonight. I hope we have enough bread, milk, eggs & toilet paper 'cause I am not going near a grocery store this afternoon! A snow day might be nice but I wonder if I should bake my 8 dozen cookies for the PTA for tomorrow? If I don't it'll stay rainy but if I do school will be closed tomorrow and I will have 8 dozen cookies at the house..maybe I should get more milk

feeling left out

I might be the only blogger in K-town to have not blogged about the gas gouging going on here in tow...oops not any longer.
Hot on the heels on the sky is falling method of pricing can we expect the same at the grocery stores when Mr Howell calls for a flake or two of snow?
I don't know that I am prepared to pay $8 for a loaf of bread or $10 for a gallon of milk

if you fly

is it really road tripping?
I suppose we did drive from NY to CT so small road trip involved. As we left the house just before 5 this morning I did not have a chance to check weather and such and did not know it had been raining cats & dogs up here-to the point the people had spent the night at LaGuardia etc.
We were lucky landed a little bit late but not so much so. LaGuardia was a zoo even more so than usual which made sense after I found out about the weather. Traffic getting out of the city & Westchester took some time but we still made it to Mom & Dad's by 10:30ish and Mom was evidently surprised to see us that early. Who knew? Not me...
I always get a kick out of flying up because generally speaking they hire a car & driver to pick us up & deliver us to their doorstep and we get the little sign, granted he spelled the name wrong but so many do, hard to believe my maiden name was easier. Going to the airport was so much more fun "back in the old days" (READ AS PRE 9-11)when you could hang out at the gate watch planes take off etc I remember many a time dropping off or picking my grandmother up and it was always fun. Now not so much an event any longer and more of a drop off or pick up at the door sort of thing no need to waste time by parking and going in the building.

it's a shame that

I didn't bring my lunch to work today.
I wasn't really minding being here so very much, getting stuff done that needed doing but then I went outside to get lunch and voila not so happy any longer-it is gorgeous out there today! The perfect summer day.
Watch it'll probably rain tomorrow!
